What is gum contouring
Gum contouring also known as gingival contouring or gum reshaping, is a cosmetic dental procedure used to improve the appearance of the gums and smile. The treatment involves reshaping excess or uneven gum tissue to create a more balanced, symmetrical smile. In some cases, gum contouring may also be performed for restorative or periodontal health reasons. For patients that feel their teeth appear short, uneven, or are hidden by excess gum tissue, gum contouring can dramatically improve aesthetics and boost confidence.
The goal is to create a more natural and attractive gum line. Some people naturally have excess gum tissue that covers too much of their teeth, often which we call "gummy smile". Others may have uneven gums that are caused by genetics, gum disease, medications, and or tooth wear. Gum contouring helps create an even proportion between the gums and teeth.
Am I a good candidate?
You are a good candidate for gum contouring if you have a "gummy smile", teeth that appear short or uneven, excess gum tissue covering the teeth, uneven gum lines, gum recession affecting appearance of your teeth, wanting to improve the look of your veneers or crowns, or to boost confidence. Gum contouring is often combined with cosmetic treatments such as veneers, whitening, or bonding to create a more complete smile makeover. In order to do the procedure your gums must be healthy and do not have active gum disease. It is also recommended that you do not have active decay on your teeth before or during your procedure. Gum contouring pairs well with other cosmetic dentistry treatments for a complete smile refresh.
